Kiln Formed Glass Studio |

Kiln Formed glass was first developed in Mesopotamia and Egypt 4000 years ago. Fused glass fell out of use about 2000 years ago with the development of blown glass because it was a slower and more restrictive method of forming glass. Inspired by the beauty of ancient glass treasures unearthed in the Egyptian tombs, artisans of kiln-formed glass have only just reemerged again in the 20th Century. The kiln-formed or fused glass technique involves cutting designs from sheets of stained glass and then fusing, molding, slumping, painting and texturing the glass by firing it in a kiln. Each piece is fired 2-4 times for 12 hours/firing. The temperature ranges from 1200-1500 degrees.
